Nano Reef
This blogger is getting back into tropical fish with a Nano ReefThis year I think I will start a Nano reef for Christmas. I am excited about the idea of it. I haven't had a tank up and running for over 2 years so this should be fun. I plan on putting in some live rock and some mushrooms and some Zooanthids also a shrimp and crab.

Fishy Memories
Do fish have memory?
Over the years it has been accepted that fish have a very short term memory and to that end they have been passed by for any kind of study in that field. Now, scientists are not only discovering that they have more than a three second recall, but can learn and retain experiences over long periods, notably a year and more.

Georgia Aquarium
The tank they set up in the next three photos was amazing to see in person. When standing in front of it, you felt as if you are surrounded by the water and fish. This tank featured salt water fish such as Clownfish and Blue Tangs also known as nemo and dory as made popular by Finding Nemo.

New Acquarium
Have fun with your new acquariumWe picked up everything, sanded and repainted the metal stand, Pat cleaned all the equipment while I dried and inspected and when Pat and I went on our little get away, we left the tank in our bathtub full of water to make sure everything was in tact. While we prepared all the things I became somewhat nervous and overwhelmed with the whole idea of an aquarium. I have to do a lot of work just with the four beta fish that we have and take care that everything is just right for them to thrive, how would I manage to take care of a 30-gallon tank full of tropical fish? Eeks!!!

Waiting With The Fishes
Waiting with the fishies is better than swimming with the fishies.
Why do so many waiting rooms have tropical fish tanks? We had a routine appointment this morning. The nature of the appointment itself is not especially relevant; the interesting part was the waiting room where we had to, well, wait. In one corner stood a tank containing a varied selection of tropical fish. There was, I believe, something not quite right about this tank, for no matter how many times I counted, I always came up with a different number of fish. (Was this the fabled enchanted fish tank of legend? Or maybe I’m just not so good at counting things that won’t stay still.)

The Tropical Fish Store
The old tropical fish store story.
So I told the story about the tropical fish store my brother and I used to walk to when we were kids. He had a big, 30-gallon fish tank with a bunch of convict fish in them. We used to love to go to the fish store, and it was really far away. A couple mile walk. Then one day we found out it had burned down. Arson.

Pet Week From Hell
Sorry to hear about your week from hell.
It’s pretty much been the Pet Week From Hell, or so I have dubbed it. My fish became deathly ill sometime last week and started dropping off like flies. It had come to my attention that something was wrong with my Mickey Mouse Platy. He has some sort of growth on his mouth. But, other than that he seemed relatively normal. But, it wasn’t this that so much concerned me it was the lethargy of my Dwarf Gourami. He just seemed to be floating in outer space. Yes, I know he’s in water and most likely floats, but not on his side or at the bottom of the tank on a regular basis, okay.

Strange Laws
Good reason to open a tropical fish store in Liverpool:
It is illegal for a woman to be topless in public except as a clerk in a tropical fish store, or in a bank if handling foreign currency.

Angsty Amateur Aquarists
Experienced tropical fish keepers know it takes a lot of work.
For three years, my house became a marine biology lab, with sticky floors and home-made raw seasalt crystallizing on various surfaces. We have a 4-foot bullet tank which is meant for tropical fish systems but because I thought it would look nice in my living room, lesser informed then about how messy marine systems can get. It was an expensive mistake, we had to correct all shortcomings with more expensive mistakes. We tried from the Smithsonian style to the Berlin-style minus the external sump to combining every equipment we could get our hands on. Just because the bullet tank was not designed to support a marine tank and we did not have the diligence to constantly keep the water quality pristine enough, corals and fish could not live happily ever after.

New Family Members
On a happy note, these new family members:
…of the family…10 new ‘homeless’ tropical fish from work are now exploring their new home…our own fish are a bit bemused but they all seem calm enough. The Man says we’re turning into a refuge…one of our cats was an unwanted kitten from work too. I just wish more people at work kept rats *grin*.

Woman Caught Smuggling Tropical Rish
How come these things always happen in Australia?
There must have been something fishy about the way she walked. Customs officials said Monday they stopped a woman as she arrived Friday in Melbourne on a flight from Singapore, and found 51 live tropical fish allegedly hidden in a specially designed apron under her skirt.

Fishy Family
The house is one of those old-style Chinese houses that's U-shaped with a central courtyard. My father's oldest brother lives there now along with his family and either I never really paid attention before or it just dawned on me this time around but they actually raise and sell tropical fish for a living. Unfortunately, none of the breeds that I'm interested in. ;-)

Tank Emergency
Good advice when the power goes out:
Somehow or another I (and a few others) missed the letter telling us that the power was to be off from 8.00am to 3.00pm so new transformers could be installed to cope with the extra demand of a nearby subdivision. Not a huge drama, except that tropical fish need their water to remain at a fairly constant temperautre in order to survive. The answer, as I found out by phoning around, is to wait until the temp drops to 24C then change about 10% of the water for unusually warm water to raise it back up to about 26C. When it drops again (about 1-1.5 hours) repeat the process until the power comes back on. This would usually be an unwisely dramatic change in temp causing undue stress on the tank’s occupants, but under the sircumstances it seemed the lesser of two evils.

Addicted To Fish
Sounds like it's time for a larger apartment.
I'm addicted to tropical fish, and ever since I moved to this 2nd floor apartment, I've been crippled, since my lease says I can't have anything over 20 gallons! Before moving to Tampa, I was running up to 8 different tanks with everything from Rift Lake Cichlids,...

So Much For The Tropical Fish Collection
Grandma sounds like quite a character.
Just keep her away from the pets!My Gran taught me to get my entertainment where I can. She certainly did. She fooled the dustman into filling up a hole that the council had just dug. She gave chocolate money to her patrons and told them it was an advance set of the new decimal currency. She accidentally bleached and fried Grandad’s tropical fish and then chucked them in the bin. That’s the kind of person that she was.

Something Fishy
Myself and Ern decided to get ourselves a tropical fish tank so I saw this as a good excuse to show off a couple of pics of our Neon Tetras. We got 15 Tertas to help establish the tank. Initially we did buy 6 Tiger Barbs but unfortunatly 5 of them died so we had to give the one remaining fish (Jon) back to the ‘fish man’. Anyway, more fishy pics as we get em!

Easier At Home
It might be easier just to raise tropical fish in the comfort of one's own home:
NZ doesn't have much in the way of tropical fish, but the stingrays were good too look at. We then drove back to Auckland and stayed in the same room as before! We all then had dinner above the city in the Sky Tower. I hated it. The lift was glass bottomed as was the door of the lift. Going down was far worse than going up. 30 floors in 10 seconds, I thought we were free-falling! The dinner wasn't very impressive. It was a buffet and none of the food was labelled and I had a virgin strawberry daiquiri and it just tasted like ice and...
