Musings Of A Cockatiel
From the blogging cockatielNobody marked the day when I hatched from the little pink egg, and I do not recall the name of the cockatiel mother who fed me or how many of the incessantly chirping other little baby birds shared our cage. Those were relatively carefree, if noisy, days, but soon, I began to wish I had never left the egg. Some humans took me and put me in a cage, but while they seemed to like my pretty singing, they did not pay much attention to me otherwise. They filled my dish and changed my water on occasion, but nobody took me out of the cage to play with me. My intelligence and beauty went unacknowledged.

House Sparrows
Click through for the bird houseI took this picture a few weeks ago. That pair of house sparrows were investigating the bird house on our back fence. They spent hours going in and out. They also sat in different parts of the cedars and on the roof, presumably checking for camouflage. Here, he watches from the the roof, while she sticks her head in for a good look.

Empty Nester
Well, I came home from school today to find the bird house empty. The chicks have all left. We hope we’ll see them around the yard. Time will tell.

A Month Of Thanksgiving
Love family traditions like this, especially when it includes a bird house drawing.
We started our Thanksgiving tree yesterday, with much enthusiasm from my three year old. Our humble tree is certainly, um . . . humble, as mom cannot draw branches worth 1/2 a cent, but Elise livened up our posterboard tree with a drawing of a tomato, apple with a worm coming out of it, a bird and a bird house. The Crawford Familiy Thanksgiving Tree, tacked up on the wall in the hall just outside the kitchen, is already filling up with leaves of thanksgiving.

Fly Away
Natural selection at work.
A nest of Carolina Chickadees hatched in our bird house on the porch. You can tell when the baby birds are about to leave the nest because the parents call out encouraging them to learn to fly. So I was ready when they came out, lest Panda find the babies first.
