Bringing Home The Pup
Good tipsBefore introducing any new pet, make sure it is healthy, has up-to-date vaccinations, and that test results for fecal parasites are negative. It is particularly important that all new cats are check for their viral titer (feline immunodeficiency virus [FIV], feline leukemia virus [FeLV]) status. Cats with positive results should not be brought into a negative household.

Barking Problems
Good information on how to stop the barking dogOne of the most frequent complaints about canine behavior is barking. Aside from the behavior is barking dog is probably the pet peeve of many non-dog owners. Most dogs get noisy when exposed to anything new or unusual. Like most dog behavior, barking is typically a symptom of an unsatisfied need.

Fairweather Dog Training
But all the other dogs were waiting for Bear.
After going to IKEA, we headed over to one of our favorite restaurants… Johnny Carinos Country Italian. It was quite delicious. We were originally planning on taking Bear to dog training tonight, but weather will prevent that from happening. As it looks now, we’ll just spend the rest of the day inside.

Training Molly
From a nice story on training the dog.
I love my children! Did I mention they don’t have volume controls? They are either too soft or too loud. Tonight they chose loud. So did I. As I converge with the pack, I declare, “do you see what shoes I’m wearing?” so that the entire class knows I cannot control my dog because I am wearing ice skates. I try to save face and make Molly sit. Then we do our show-off gag where I set the leash down and she does not move while I place the dog food into the cart. Only this time the class is staring and Molly tries to bolt.

Dog Training
The dog training video you were waiting to see!
So I went a couple of weeks ago to check out a dog training center that I had seen a bunch of commercials for on the animal planet channel. If you live in the Cincy area and watch that channel its the one that they have the dog washing the car where they say, "Good job spot" or something along those lines. Cheesy, I know, but still it got my attention and I went to their web site and contacted them. I figure if they train police dogs and service dogs they must know what they are doing. So I went to a presentation where they show you what your dog could do if you get them trained. It was amazing and I was sold. You can see the video here, but be warned it is quite large: Training Demo

Welcome To My Blog
Welcome to the blogosphere.
My passion is pets...dogs, cats, and I would love to share information with other pet owners. I am fairly knowledgeable, and would be willing to offer some limited advice on general matters. It is always best though to consult your Veterinarian and I will not ever try and diagnose medical problems...but I may be able to advise what it MIGHT be and what your VET should be considering...they are the experts though and know much more than I do. I do know quite a bit about animal behaviour, particularly cats, and have done some dog training, so feel free to ask about those areas!

George's Big Adventure
Nice story about George.
While there I filled out the little forms for all the drawings and we won the second place for the dog training so he gets half off the beginner's course. Hooray for us! I was really hoping for the free food for a year but I'll take what I can get.

Dog Training Can Be Easy!
Funny!
Sometimes, I think of dog training like a stressful negotiation with a union factory worker. Factoryworkers have a specific job and if you ask them to add to their duties, you have to negotiate with them for weeksuntil you finally break down and give them a $1.50/hour raise in pay or something. And I’ve had a few dogs that actedexactly the same way …

Midsummer Day
Never heard of this training book before.
Oh dear, I haven’t made notes on the books I’ve read. Well, I’m guessing around 10-12. I haven’t read as much as I normally do. My favorite… hm… I’ll say “Kontaktkontraktet” by Eva Bodfäldt, because it’s such an excellent book on dog training.

Exercise and Dog Training
I never thought of this, but it easier to train a well-exercised dog:
When you start training a dog exercise becomes even MORE important. Dogs that are so wound up that they are bouncing off the walls are really difficult to train so much so that it’s often nearly impossible. But, if the dogs are exercised on a regular basis things change dramatically. With daily walks (of reasonable times) we can calm these guys down enough to get their attention and get down to some serious dog training that would be impossible with a "backyard" dog.

Puppy Training For the Whole Family
Good advice on proper training of a puppy.

The New Trainer
Congrats on the new job!
Yeah, it’s been a very busy week. Work has been hectic. On top of the normal abnormality I also have added another big tasking to my somewhat overloaded schedule. I will be begin teaching canine education. In other words, I’m the dog trainer. We have an instructor already but he is not exactly overly ambitious, and is falling short on filling classes. The district manager came down from corporate and was talking to everyone about the dog training classes. I have some exposure / experience regarding dog training and next thing you know...
