Shelties
Useful post on the Sheltie.
Although a Shetland Sheepdog resembles a small Collie, it is not a "Miniature Collie". The term "Miniature Collie" implies that the Sheltie is a bred down version of the Collie, which it is not. The early Shetland Sheepdogs came from a small herding dog, called the "Toonie Collie" or "Toonie dog".

Popular Dog Breeds
Click throughThe lady next door Mrs. Jonathan, was asking me as to which dog she is going to adopt since her grand daughter is constantly pampering her to get a puppy. Its really a matter of concern for all of us as to which dog will be an idle companion and a true friend. And, its out of this sheer necessity that I came up with a list of the top 10 most popular dog breeds in US.

I just thought you would want to see the perfectly good flippy that I found Sunday at the lake. I shook it to hard though and the strap flew off in no time.

I Want One
We love the Siberian Husky dog breed, too.
The only dog breed I ever want as a pet/friend. Siberian Huskies are soooo cool! I’ve been wanting one ever since I saw them on National Geographic.

A Match
Sometimes the dog breed that looks right isn't the right dog breed.
It is really exciting when you decide to bring home a pet especially a dog. Dog’s have been proved as the most loving & faithful creatures across world. They have said to be used in treatment of depressed in some countries. They are proven stress busters after a long hectic day at work & are the latest status symbol of the city. But halt ever thought that your pet can also have a temperament ? That petite chihuahua who makes the city dwellers fall in love with his much compact size enabling him to be carried in a handbag is bundled with a terrier like temperament.

Dangerous Dogs
The fact is that CERTAIN DOG BREEDS ARE INHERENTLY DANGEROUS. Yes, I agree that “not all dogs (of a certain breed) attack”, but what an absurd statement to make! OF COURSE, they don’t ALL attack, you tards! But they have a MUCH higher likelihood of attacking and causing serious harm or death. People don’t just make this stuff up as an excuse to judge your “baby”.

Dog Craze
A dog-crazed girl!
There was this small puppy, about the size of a full grown adult's palm. It is a Jack Russell. The moment I saw him, i was momentarily stunned. Never have I seen such a Jack Russell with such nice coat of fur and colour. He seemed to be staring at me. My heart melted immediately! Sigh! "Selling at $1000!" !@^$%&%^&$&$^^#%#%$OMG! There were also Siberian Huskies (cool), Golden Retrievers (handsome)! And very very cute maltese (zacky!!!)

Breed-Specific Legislation
Making the dog wrong isn't necessarily fixing the problem.
There are several samples of existing non-breed specific legislation (i.e., the State of California) that are competent in regulating the irresponsible owners and not punishing those who maintain their dogs safely and humanely. I, as a responsible dog owner, ask that we seriously consider the impact of breed specific legislation. The irresponsible owners don’t care what breed of dog they lose the right to own…. they’ll find another dog breed to fit their needs, or simply ignore the new legislation.

Mastiff Puppies
Lots of help here if you're considering a mastiff pup.
REMEMBER , even though your mastiff puppy is large, it is a very young delicate baby. Your mastiff pup will sleep a great deal the first month, and much like human babies ,will start to get more energy and be awake for longer periods as they get older.

About My Dogs
It takes a good master to make a good dog.
In 99.9% of the cases in all dog breeds, in my point of view, it ain’t the dog that is the problem, but the owner/caretaker. Some people don’t socialize with the puppy, to meet other dogs, strange people, wierd (to dogs eyes) things like cars, motorbikes…

Pit Bulls And Dangerous Breeds
This article from the Globe and Mail puts some context around the information that led to Ontario’s current dangerous-breed legislation. After the violent attack in New Brunswick of a young child by three Rottweilers those who would ban violent or dangerous dog breeds have rose to the surface once again. This article is interesting given that it presents a (relatively) balanced series of opinions both in favour of the breeds and in favour of banning certain dogs. Of particular interest is the couple of paragraphs which state that the biggest biters are German Shepherds, Cocker Spaniels, Golden Retrievers and Rottweilers, yet most people want to ban Pitbulls and other ‘working dog’ breeds.

Never heard of the Cavapoo breed.
Today I started working with a wonderful little 12 week old puppy today that was of a mix I’ve never seen before and has a wonderful mash up name. This pup was a cross between a Cavalier King Charles and a mini Poodle. It’s a Cavapoo and was it ever cute!

Best In Show
A trip report on the National Dog Show.
We took an easy trip up to the Fort Washington Expo center. The whole thing had the appearance of, well, a dog convention. There were all kinds of booths selling doggy paraphenelia (Dog Shampoo! Leashes! Toenail Clippers!) and there was a food court. You could watch dogs judged by breed in little rings in which the handlers put the dogs through their paces. But mostly you could walk around the 'benching' area and ask owners about their dog breeds.

Buy A Mastiff
Advice from a breeder blogger about mastiffs.
Personally I would not by a pup who is registered with any other North American Registry. You will want to know what health problems the contract covers .What is the temperament of the parents and grand parents. Is the breeder willing to help you day or night if you have a problem with the pup. Warning signs are breeders who do not ask you questions like , why do you want a mastiff? Do you have a fenced yard?, Do you plan on breeding ? Will the puppy be along during the day? Have you had a large breed in the past ? How many dogs do you have right now? You want to buy from a breeder who is concerned what kind of home there pup is going to .

Dogs Have Teeth
A post on dog breeds and mauling.
Another ridiculous argument goes that other breeds are more likely to bite. Again, a dog bite, while painful, is much different than a mauling. All dog breeds have teeth, and animals bite. Duh. But what is different here is that in this case, breeds that make up a bigger part of the population tend to have an overall number of bites. When adjusted for population, the overall trend is flatter. Very very few breeds of dog are known to maul people to death.

Find The Right Dog Quiz
If you're confused about which dog breed is best for you, click through.
The quiz asks a series of questions and then gives a list of dog breeds that would be good for you. The only thing I didn’t like about the quiz was that there were a lot of questions about dog food (I guess since that is what Purina makes), but other than that, I thought it was fun and informative.

Wolf Lesson
Here's a blog that has a lesson on a new animal every day ... and today is the wolf.
About 10.000 years ago, when man started settling down and raising cattle, another development started: The domestication of the Wolf, which is recognized as the ancestor of all domestic dog breeds nowadays. Possibly it started that way: Some Wolves have been less timid than others and instead of searching for nearness to the herds they entered the human settlements to search for food among the scraps of meat, a behaviour that is still shown by Wolves in certain areas nowadays. These Wolves became more and more used to humans and humans learned to profit from the social behaviour of Wolves, which is crucial to the close relationship between dog and man. Thus the Wolf became the oldest domestic animal following Sheep and Goat.

The Demise Of Greyhounds
Race dogs often are put down after their racing career ends.
Greyhound is a type of dog. They are very fast runners and are very gentle creatures. Unfortunately, they are bred for dog races, similar to horse races. When injured, in old age or when not fast enough to compete, i.e. when no use for races, these dogs are killed.

Ultra Disguise Kits
Another blogger picks up this hysterical ruse.
Click through for links to the site.Ultra disguise kits for dogs. Turn your doberman into a giant poodle. Apparently Qld are banning a number of 'dangerous' dog breeds of which the doberman is one. The owner of this dog is annoyed because, as he rightly points out, it's not the breed of dog that is the problem, but how it has been treated and socialised. Any dog can bite.

Dachshunds can be feisty critters.
Oscar doesn't chase rabbits anymore, but he'll still go after cats. That's pretty amazing, because four years ago Oscar's rear legs were paralyzed. Oscar is a 7-year-old dachshund, owned by Dan Paulin of Boonville.

San Francisco Pit Bull Killing
A sad case in San Francisco news recently of the family pit bulls killing one of the children.
Click through for the full story."We have to be realistic," Newsom said. "You've got dogs that literally can kill. We've seen it demonstrated. If we can't change people's behavior and make them think what's in their best interest, then that's when government comes along and becomes a bit paternalistic."
The boy was home alone at the time of the attack. Asked if she was ever worried about the dogs, Faibish responded: "Never. They're not vicious."

PTTA
PTTA, People for the Traditional Treatment of Animals, says animals should not be spayed or neutered.
A growing number of traditionalist pet owners are refusing to have their dogs and cats spayed and neutered, saying that surgical sterilization encourages pets to be sexually active before they are emotionally ready.I disagree with this, but then I'm hardly one for traditional values. I just hate to see so many strays put down.

Names of Dog Breeds
Your Chinese lesson for today:
In Chinese, specific dog names contain 犬, so even if you aren’t familiar with a specific dog type, you still know it is a dog. English doesn’t work this way. You need to memorize the common dog types, otherwise when someone says to you, “Do you like German Shepherds?” you will have no idea what they are talking about.

Purity
In a discussion about the problems of purity, this example:
Then there's zoology. "Pure-bred" dogs are highly prized, but are susceptible to a host of genetic ailments. Displaced joints, chronic conditions, and a host of other problems (I'm reminded about the stories I've heard about how the bulldog breed has been bred and refined to the point where it can't conceive and deliver puppies without help from humans) beset the "best in show" candidates. But it's the rare purebred that can compete with a good old fashioned mutt on simple survival. And the so-called "thoroughbred" race horses originated from crossing...

Italian Greyhounds
I like retrievers more than I like racing dogs.
My wife and I are interested in getting an Italian Greyhound (IG). We’ve considered retired racing Greyhounds and Whippets: while we both adore the Greyhound, it is a large dog, and the cats really like dogs small enough to beat up. Whippets have a reputation of being aggressive around cats, and many aren’t much bigger than big IGs. She’s been reading about the breed and actively contacting rescue, pet, and breeder groups to learn more about IGs. A week ago, Saturday, we went to the Fields-Ertle PetSmart to meet Sammy and her mom...

Dog Fight, or, This Court Knows Jack Russell About Terriers
A whole controversy brewing over Jack Russell Terriers ... and I knew nothing about it!
My gay friends call them Jane Russell Terriers. The JRTCA opposed the AKC listing of Jack Russell Terriers, believing that an alternative all-breed kennel club standard and registry was not in the best interests of the dog. The JRTCA emphasizes the working-dog characteristics of the breed, and believes that any kennel club standard would over time change the dog into a show breed, bred for form not function. The JRTCA undertook a campaign to discourage its members and the public from participating with the AKC . . . . As part of its policy, JRTCA members who registered their dogs with the AKC had their JRTCA membership terminated and were not permitted to participate in JRTCA dog shows.

Myths About the Pit Bull
A good post on the much-maligned pit bull:
Read the entire article. There are a number of dog breeds that are often called pit bulls, most with no more claim to the name than having a short coat. Bullmastiffs, boxers, shar peis, Boston terriers, even many square-headed Labrador retrievers or greyhound mixes are often mistaken for pit bulls. A dog was killed a few years ago in England under its pit bull laws, all expert testimony and the dog's owner as well holding the dog to be a Great Dane/greyhound cross. So looks are indeed deceiving.

So one of the keys to building this website, is that I wanted it to be relevant for lovers of all dog breeds or various dog breeds. It gets complicated to build a community site that tries to address such a wide variety of interests. . . how do you develop content dealing with about 200 different animals, when you’re just one person??? Well, you have to rely on the folks that find the site to contribute!

Sheep-Dog Trials
I'd love to see one of these trials.
Sheepdog trial (or simply dog trial) is a competitive dog sport in which herding dog breeds move sheep around a field, fences, gates, or enclosures as directed by their handlers. Such events are particularly associated with hill farming areas, where sheep range widely on largely unfenced land. These trials are popular in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and other farming nations.
