Bird Flu Transmission
A safe approach to pet birds during the bird flu scare.
I have found items sold in pet stores which are guaranteed to kill the germs that cause bird flu according to their packaging. This makes sense as good hygiene, especially where pet birds are concerned, is paramount to good health for both you and your pets. Personally, there is no way in Hades that I'd risk going to a bird show or purchasing a bird at one at the present, thankyouverymuch. This strikes me as one of the worst moves one could make until this virus is eradicated, if that's possible.

Cat Versus Coyote
Trying to protect the cat from the coyote.
Well, I have to tell you today was an interesting day. We are trying to get our cat to be an indoor cat because we have coyotes in the area that prey on cats at night. Now that our cat is 6 months old, well, he wants to go outside. We have put the barrier door on our dog’s doggie door because our cat has figured out how to go outside using the doggie door. We take the dog out several times per day to do his duty. But now it’s a battle to keep the cat in … every time we go out, the cat tries to sneak out. This takes time away from my Internet website about artists wall clock because I’m always trying to police my cat.

Therapy Dogs, Therapy Squirrels
Are exotic animals replacing people.
Naturally, the trend towards exotic pets as stress-relievers has some folks worried. People like Ruth, Claude, and Morris might be considered "a few sandwiches short of a picnic," as an editorial in the Minneapolis Post and Beam put it. Mental health professionals seem worried, too. "If you notice a common theme here, it's because, more and more, humans are using their relationships with animals as a substitute for learning to live in the real world," according to Dr. Martini Scholes of the University of Southern North Dakota's School of Psychiatry. "Ruth could have taken an anger-management class; instead she adopted a rodent with an attitude. Claude could have built a fence around his garden and installed alarms, but he went with the cheetah. Morris could have sent his son to the Marines, but he got a hippo, which is really a quasi-marine substitute."

A Match
Sometimes the dog breed that looks right isn't the right dog breed.
It is really exciting when you decide to bring home a pet especially a dog. Dog’s have been proved as the most loving & faithful creatures across world. They have said to be used in treatment of depressed in some countries. They are proven stress busters after a long hectic day at work & are the latest status symbol of the city. But halt ever thought that your pet can also have a temperament ? That petite chihuahua who makes the city dwellers fall in love with his much compact size enabling him to be carried in a handbag is bundled with a terrier like temperament.

The Dog Kennel That Didn't Get Away
The story of the girl in high heels who chased away the dog kennelHe casually walks up to my truck and looks over the tailbed. I stare intently….knowing that the only things back there are some rain-ruined moving boxes, and a collapsable Michael Graves dog kennel that I placed out there upon my return to Dallas this weekend.

Dog Guilt
Dealing with the deaf old dog.
Granted, the dog is mostly deaf, nor is she particularly fluent in English, so my words meant nothing to her. But D came downstairs and said, "Did I just hear you threaten Jelly with the pound?" He was surprised, and a little amused, that the daily occurrence of Jelly stomping on Rocky, then barking like an idiot, pushed me to those melodramatic words. And me? I just felt guilty.

Dangerous Dogs
The fact is that CERTAIN DOG BREEDS ARE INHERENTLY DANGEROUS. Yes, I agree that “not all dogs (of a certain breed) attack”, but what an absurd statement to make! OF COURSE, they don’t ALL attack, you tards! But they have a MUCH higher likelihood of attacking and causing serious harm or death. People don’t just make this stuff up as an excuse to judge your “baby”.

For The Birds
The home repair saga.
But while I made great strides on my to do list last summer, I didn't finish all of it. Some things which one day might be improved were left as is, and I'm sure that I forgot to make a couple of repairs. My conviction stems from an e-mail we received the other day. Our rental agent sent a mail stating that birds had nested in the vent pipe over our stove. Oops. That was one of those items on my original to-do list. Our house has seen a number of remodeling jobs over the years--some done quite well, others not so. One of the latter was the addition of a fan above the stove. The person who put it in ran the vent pipe over to the south end of the house, punched an irregular hole into the wall and simply stuck the twisted pipe out of the hole. The guy who inspected the place before we bought it had recommended that we put a vent covering over it, to keep the wind out. After buying the house I eventually scrambled up onto the roof and investigated the project. Because of the bent pipe, I couldn't just slap a vent cover on it. I'd have to mend the hole and bang the pipe back into shape. Anyway, since it was a more challenging fix, I put it off and off again. Then, a few years back, a group of pigeons decided they liked our bird feeder, and took up residence on our roof. They would often sit on the roof of our back porch and their coos would resonate down into our kitchen. 'Twas annoying, but it was one of those things that was relatively easy to adapt to.

Finch Feeder
Yet another bird feeder.
Along with the plants, flowers, dirt and whiskey barrels - we picked up a few more finch feeders. We already have a ton of different bird feeders in the backyard - - but I love the goldfinches! So wanted to put up some finch feeders .. fill ‘em with thistle and attract those cute little guys. We put up three new ones. And here’s the result, within an hour of getting them hung and filled:

House Sparrows
Click through for the bird houseI took this picture a few weeks ago. That pair of house sparrows were investigating the bird house on our back fence. They spent hours going in and out. They also sat in different parts of the cedars and on the roof, presumably checking for camouflage. Here, he watches from the the roof, while she sticks her head in for a good look.
