Fill The Feeder, Please
Taking care of one another.
Munching on my bagel this morning, I watched the tiny wren trying to dig out some food from the bottom of the bird feeder, which was hanging on empty. He sat on that perch for almost a half-hour, futilely pecking and looking around and watching for someone to come out and fill the feeder. He had faith that someone would. And so we did.

New Blog!
Welcome to the blogosphere, cat slave.
Anyway, we have a new owner! A siamese cat named Ginger, in fact, is now our owner. She has already declared our bed and couch as “hers” and I think she has her eyes on my Gamecube and laptop. She’s letting Di keep her computer though because all cats know that Dells suck ass.

Backyard Habitats
Never heard of the Backyard Habitat program.
Drylie worked alongside Mizejewski, who also manages the National Wildlife Backyard Habitat program. Under their direction, Jim and Julie Tensfeldt, children Cali, 10 and Timothy, 6, and members of the crew installed bird feeders, birdhouses, a water feature and dozens of native plants to their yard.

Wildlife Threatened After Communism
Never thought that there would be a bad side to the end of communism.
Were it not for the collapse of the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), more wildlife would be happily fluttering and leaping through the forests of present-day Russia. At least that’s what the Inter Press Service News Agency reported on July 31st. If your response was like mine, you probably just said “huh?” Apparently, the newly rich citizens of Russian demand exotic pets, including such endangered species as lemurs, rare birds, and Caiman, which are sold along with such domestic animals as cats, guinea pigs, and fish.

Spiders And Ants And Bears, Oh My!
Not as bad as lions and tigers, but we do have a bear that tore down our bird feeder and mangled our large garbage bin last night.

Find The Right Dog Quiz
If you're confused about which dog breed is best for you, click through.
The quiz asks a series of questions and then gives a list of dog breeds that would be good for you. The only thing I didn’t like about the quiz was that there were a lot of questions about dog food (I guess since that is what Purina makes), but other than that, I thought it was fun and informative.

No Dogs
For families that bring their dogs everywhere, a "no dogs inside" policy can be brutal.
We’d been waiting for this couple to arrive for two hours now, they’d telephoned earlier to say they would be arriving around 12:00, if that was ok, we’d said yes it was ok as their room was ready for them. (normally when booking we ask guests to arrive between 4 and 7 pm and if they are to arrive outside these times then they are to telephone to let us know) anyway, they arrive at the door and as normal we are both there to meet them, however they have a dog with them, probably dog is a bit too strong a word for what the woman had in her arms, I’d call it a rat but there you go, anyway we say to them that we are very sorry but we don’t accept animals in the rooms, they are quite welcome to leave it in their car or in the stable block opposite the car parking area, they are horrified at this thought and said that when they had booked they had heard a dog barking in the back ground and had assumed that dogs were accepted, we said that we have dogs of our own which never come into contact with the “guests” or the guest areas. The old man is getting quite upset now “you accept children don’t you ?” he snaps “Yes we do“

Choosing the Right Dog Breed for You
Good tips on selecting a dog for a pet.
After you have thought about the qualities that you would like in a dog, it’s time to do some research on the dog breeds that might be best for you. The American Kennel Club’s website has a directory of dog breeds, and they are classified by group. The site describes the general characteristics of the group, as well as information about each breed.

Bird Action
Bird feeders are great gifts.
I’m pleased as punch with the beautiful bird feeder Blake gave me for our anniversary last weekend. So far the nuthatches and chickadees are enjoying it immensely.

Wolf Lesson
Here's a blog that has a lesson on a new animal every day ... and today is the wolf.
About 10.000 years ago, when man started settling down and raising cattle, another development started: The domestication of the Wolf, which is recognized as the ancestor of all domestic dog breeds nowadays. Possibly it started that way: Some Wolves have been less timid than others and instead of searching for nearness to the herds they entered the human settlements to search for food among the scraps of meat, a behaviour that is still shown by Wolves in certain areas nowadays. These Wolves became more and more used to humans and humans learned to profit from the social behaviour of Wolves, which is crucial to the close relationship between dog and man. Thus the Wolf became the oldest domestic animal following Sheep and Goat.

Cat Breed Ontology
You'll have a PhD when you finish reading this.
Anyhow the mail that’s pulled the earlier question back off the to-do list was a pointer from Monica Castiglioni to her “Esempi di una Semplice Ontologia - il Dizionario dei Gatti” (she’d stumbled on my Pet Profile stuff). It’s a cat breed ontology, with a version in HTML and XML, with a table view of the data styled using XSLT. RDF hasn’t been used, but the XML is pretty cleanly structured, I’d suggest a pass through Make your XML RDF-Friendly

Rabies Shots
Repairing cars and cats.
The rest of the bat was MIA, and the five loose cats were looking very self satisfied.
You know what this means? Rabies boosters for the whole damned crowd. 19 cats. Although the others were confined in their runs and rooms, because they could come in contact with the bat killers, they must be vaccinated, too.

Woody Woodslacker
The bird feeder is center stage in this nature drama.
The little green birdhouse has been abandoned, fledglings carried away on a warm summer breeze. Yellowjackets have become bolder, more aggressive, sensing that their days are numbered, stealing from hummingbird feeder and soda cans with angry, buzzing greed. An occasional Stellers jay is seen high in the canopy, scouting the foothills for a winter home when the high country is, once more, frozen in ice. Dawn comes just a bit later each morning and the shadows on the deck are slanted ever so slightly northward, beckoning to the land of snow far away.

Sweet Kitty
Researchers at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia and their collaborators said Sunday they found a dysfunctional feline gene that probably prevents cats from tasting sweets, a sensation nearly every other mammal on the planet experiences to varying degrees.
